La'ela'eikealookalaumaile Sundberg

laelae-hula-instructorLa’ela’eikealookalaumaile Sundberg began her studies of Hawaiian hula and chanting in Kailua, O’ahu, in May 1989.  She has taught hula and chanting since 1991.  La’ela’e’s areas of expertise include Hula Kahiko (ancient hula) and ‘Auana (modern hula), Choreography, Chanting and Chant composition, ‘Olelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian language), History and Culture, Costume and Lei making, as well as creating hula implements and instruments.  La’ela’e has studied under a number of master Kumu Hula (hula instructors) and master Chanters, thus acquiring a great variety of skills.  In August 1997, La’ela’e graduated in a traditional ‘Uniki (graduation) ceremony by Hula Master Kekau’ilani Kalama.  La'ela'e is the representative for the State of Colorado to the Hula Association of the Midwest.  In Kailua, Hawai'i, La'ela'e is the instructor of Halau Na Pua Nani O Loliana.  During her years in Hawai'i, La'ela'e was a member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha; she was their chanter at the Hawai'i State Convention in 1998.  In 1996, La'ela'e, her son Alika Pohaikealohaokalani and her daughter Makanaokalani danced hula for the Hawai'i 5-0 Reunion at the Tahitian Lanai in Waikiki.  La'ela'e has extensive experience in teaching women, men, children, the elderly and students with special needs.
 
In May 2015, full of aloha and mahalo, La'ela'e celebrated her 26th anniversary in hula.
 
Outside of hula, La'ela'e has a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics, American Studies and Law; she is a certified document translator and court interpreter, as well as a certified interpreter trainer. In addition, La'ela'e has many years of experience as a simultaneous conference interpreter.  She is a founding member of HITA, Hawai'i Interpreters and Translators Association.  In 1995, La'ela'e was one of the lead interpreters for the International Women's Conference in Honolulu, the preparatory conference for Beijing, China.
